Dear Lingual Orthodontic Friend,
We were delighted to hear that our friend, Alain Decker, has accepted the responsibility of organising the 8th ESLO Conference in Cannes at the French Riviera. When Alain suggested to us that we join up with the organisation of the Scientific Programme, we realised, after our initial elation, the extent of the responsibility that we had accepted and we began to ask ourselves some questions. Some of these included: How do you organise a successful conference? What will most interest the audience? What do conference delegates, having invested a considerable amount, expect when they come to such meetings?
The response to these questions will necessarily involve perfect organisation, which fortunately will be taken care of by the President, A. Decker. Similarly, it also involves organising a Scientific Programme, which responds to the clinical and practical questions of our daily practice, as well as the acquisition of new knowledge. Such knowledge may not have an obvious link to our work in the chair, but may well have a place in the practice of tomorrow.

Lingual Orthodontics is practiced as a team, and is a job which, in the chair, involves two pairs of hands. This is where our assistants have a significant role to play. This is why we are creating a space for them.
We would like to limit the number of rooms in order to concentrate on the essential, and to select the best conferences without missing anything.

The first subject discussed will concern what maxillo-facial surgery brings to the balance of our treatments. Aesthetics are our patients’ main motivation. Our society offers numerous possibilities that enable people to improve their appearance, either through various manipulations, diets or cosmetic surgery.
In this field, we find ourselves at a crossroads between this concern for physical appearance and our specialised branch of health care, which is concerned with complex morphological and functional balances.Modifying the position of the teeth by orthodontics alone, or in combination with maxillo-facial surgery, has significant consequences on facial balance. The quest for dental balance must be done while being aware of the general periodontal balance which involves the periodontium, temporol-mandibular joints and of course the face, the smile and so on ...This theme will be at the heart of our first subject: "Maxillo-Facial and Aesthetic Surgery".The speakers will present their point of view as well as their approach. Analysis of the treatment indications and objectives will present approaches which lead to a greater level of care. We all come face to face with these techniques and our consideration of this subject is not new. This is why you are invited to present the way you work so that we can share our knowledge in a global way (ref. Request for presentations). |

The second subject discussed will aim to highlight the benefits of CAD/CAM: Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing.
Information Technology has already invaded our surgeries and this will continue. Our good old casts are in the process of becoming obsolete, wax set ups are becoming out of date, standardised retainers are under threat …
The development of CAD/CAM especially affects laboratory procedures that now come back to orthodontists with greater precision and interactivity…
The top experts, all pioneers in these techniques, will be present to show us the most recent advances. |

Our third subject concerns multi-disciplinary treatments. Now that adults have invaded our surgeries, we find ourselves confronted with problems that we rarely find in adolescents, due to their young and fully healthy dentition.
Adults, on the other hand, have a dental history with numerous treatments, missing teeth, prostheses etc.
The ODF treatment plan cannot be separated from its context and rehabilitating a mouth can require the skill of all the specialisations of ORL and dentistry: Periodontics - endodontics – implantology – prosthetics – maxillo-facial surgery – orthodontics …
Implementation of these complex treatments requires clearly predicting a treatment plan which precisely defines the order of practitioners and the time required, as well as providing an assessment of treatment costs and an explanation of the risks associated with any treatment.
By choosing to develop an interdisciplinary approach, we wish to bring into focus the whole approach, as well as highlight certain crucial points of the specialisations with which we work.

Orthodontic material, including its most recent developments as well as their implementation is an unavoidable subject, due to the creativity of our specialisation where new ideas are constantly on the boil. |

Clinical application is a subject close to the hearts of all conference delegates. I am certain that we will finish this conference with many new ideas but also several clinical tricks, which will be useful to our daily practice. |

The Scientific Committee is looking forward to your contributions and would like to receive as many as possible to make this conference lively and inventive.
We are eager to meet everyone in Cannes for the 8th ESLO at the beginning of July (July 3 to July 6, 2008).
Best and warm regards
Olivier SOREL
